I recently attended a 2-day real estate seminar that was hosted by an incredibly successful real estate investor, who brought with him a slew of super-smart people, motivating speakers, and educational resources. Not only did the conference provide opportunities to build a valuable network, the wealth of information that was passed was priceless. I was literally surrounded by multi-millionaires who ranged from lenders, to apartment syndicators, to house flippers, to mobile home park owners, to mortgage note investors, to developers. I felt like the dumbest person in the room…which is a good thing!
Most of us have seen Jim Rohn’s quote “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with” and as much as I would like to spend more of my time with the speakers and educators at that conference, it is probably unlikely that they will be included in my daily interactions. Although, I have definitely added a lot of them to my Rolodex.
Jim Rohn’s less known quote, however, is more fitting to this scenario; “Surround yourself with people who will support and encourage you to chase your dreams, through the good and the bad. Your success depends on it.” The investors that attended and spoke at the conference have similar goals and dreams to mine and surrounding myself around those people for 2 days not only boosted my confidence, but they inspired me to keep reaching for my targets. Between the connections I made, the lessons I learned, and the action steps presented, I have taken more action in the past month than I did all last year. I have already reached my primary financial goal for the year, and its only March.
The point is that YOU have to choose to put yourself in a room with smarter/more successful people. YOU have to do it; nobody else will make you do it.
Now, this doesn’t mean you just need to go pay and attend a bunch of conferences. Was that real estate conference somewhat expensive? Yes, but oh was it worth it! And yes, I received a ton of valuable information at the event, but what I think was more valuable were the people I met. I intentionally surrounded myself around smarter/more successful people than me.
So, I’ll leave you with this; one of the conference speakers gave us a “7-Step Success Formula” and you’ll notice that one of the steps is to Build Incredibly Strong Networks. So, go out there and surround yourself with successful people. Your success depends on it.
